Atlas Wool Supply Co. 2ply rug yarn

High Atlas 2ply wool is made by weavers of The Anou Cooperative in Morocco using traditional spinning techniques, and is the same yarn used by the weavers to make their rugs. They are paid a premium to produce yarn for export, in addition to the wool they produce to use for their own rugs which are sold through the Anou Cooperative. It is the highest quality wool yarn that can be found in Morocco with a micron range between 25-30 with little to no kemp and excellent dye absorption.

The sheep that provide this wool roam freely on the slopes of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, so you may find traces of plant material in the yarn - however this is not uncommon in most rug wools we come across.

High Atlas Wool is perfect for tapestry weaving and rug knotting, and as a bulky yarn is also suitable for knitting and crocheting accessories such as bags and clutches, as well as rustic outerwear, with great stitch definition. You can check out Atlas Wool Supply Co's website for free knitting patterns on the Atlas Wool Supply Co website.

Purchasing this wool at a premium ensures that not only the cooperative weavers are paid fairly for their yarn (many weavers around the world are expected to produce supplies for the goods for free), but that the rug market in Morocco - undoubtedly of huge cultural heritage significance globally - retains a value on quality rug wool amid a climate of high demand, adulterated wool supplies and rapidly diminishing returns on artisanal tapestries. Every purchase makes a difference.

It is a delight to finally share with you an amazing, ethically produced yarn from the high atlas region of Morocco. This yarn is of exceptional quality and dyed to order for suppliers, thereby reducing waste. We have started our supply with a small batch and colourway, and will steadily bring online a broader range.
